Duvet cover materials information

Cotton

Despite the increasing use of different fabrics to make covers, most duvet covers are still made from cotton. It is widely produced, so the cost price is relatively low. The quality of cotton depends on the amount of yarn being woven. The more yarn used, the finer the fabric and the higher the quality. The price of a duvet cover often shows how fine the cotton used is.

Material:

Cotton is a natural product. Cotton is a soft, single-celled fibre that grows from the seeds of the cotton plant. The fibres are spun into threads to make a soft and air-permeable fabric. The number of threads per inch determines the quality of the fabric. The more threads used per inch, the finer the fabric is and the higher the quality.

Advantages:

Cotton breathes and absorbs moisture well, ensuring a comfortable night’s sleep. Cotton also feels nice and cool, ideal for warmer periods! It falls smoothly and is relatively cheap.

Disadvantages:

Cotton duvet covers are more likely to shrink and wrinkle than covers made from other fabrics. It is, therefore, important to follow the washing instructions. With cheaper pieces of cotton, the fabric may feel rougher. However, this is very personal.

Flannel

Flannel is mainly used for bedding, such as duvet covers and (fitted) sheets, but also for pyjamas and shirts. A flannel duvet cover is generally not chosen because of better and worse quality than other fabric types but because of the favourable heat properties.

Material:

Flannel generally contains cotton or wool fibres in the base. However, flannel can also be made from synthetic or different fibres. The flannel duvet covers in our range are all made from cotton. Flannel is made from loosely spun yarn that is woven in a linen or twill weave.

The flannel is lightly roughened on one or both sides, making it soft to the touch. The quality depends on the amount of yarn woven. The more yarns woven, the finer the fabric is.

Benefits:

Flannel is soft to the touch and adapts very quickly to body temperature. This makes it feel warm quickly, and many people fall asleep faster. Flannel also repels cold better than, for example, cotton. Perfect for the winter period.

Disadvantages:

For (very) warm-blooded people, it can be a disadvantage that flannel quickly adapts to body temperature. We, therefore, recommend choosing a different material if you are not bothered by the cold and are more likely to be too warm than too cold.

(Cotton satin

The softest and smooth fabric from which velvet duvet covers are made is Satin. The way of weaving creates a shiny weave. The shine gives it a luxurious look. Satin is used for making bed linen, (bridal) clothing and lingerie.

The word satin is derived from the French Satin (shiny, soft silk fabric) and the older Satin, which may be derived from or related to the Spanish Aceituno, also called set uni. This word is said to have been borrowed from the Arabic zaituni, which meant ‘satin’ and would have previously meant ‘From Citong’. Strong, now Quanzhou was the place in China where the Satin came from.

Material:

The name satin refers to the way of weaving. This can be done with both natural and synthetic yarn. You will only find satin bedding made from 100% cotton in our range. One weft thread and one warp thread when weaving ordinary cotton. When weaving (cotton) satin, four weft threads are used over one warp thread. This weaving technique ensures that the yarns can be woven very closely together. The result of this is that you get the finest quality available.

Advantages:

Cotton satin feels a little smoother, a little colder and supple. It has a subtle shine and a luxurious look. Satin absorbs moisture very quickly and breathes well. Sleeping on a satin pillowcase is good for your hair. It is less likely to tangle and fluff. A satin pillowcase also ensures softer and more even skin.

Cons:

Satin can feel slippery, it can take a while to get used to this material. This does not apply to the cotton satin duvet covers in our range. These feel more like soft cotton. Due to the intensive production process, the price of a satin duvet cover is higher than that of other covers.

We have called the duvet covers on our website ‘cotton satin’ duvet covers. This is because we only offer satin duvet covers that are made with cotton yarns and are therefore a natural product.

Percale cotton

Percal has been around for a long time, it comes from pargalai, an ancient fabric from Persia. Percale (also called percale) is a soft, smooth fabric that resembles Satin. The covers we offer are made of 100% cotton. The name percale refers to the way of weaving the fabric. In terms of quality, you can place percale over cotton and Satin. Percale is less smooth than Satin.

Material:

Percale uses a weaving technique with a plain weave. This ensures that the yarns are woven closely together. This creates a fine quality that feels smooth and supple. Cotton may be called percale if more than 200 woven threads are used per inch.

Pros:

Percale is very smooth and soft to the touch, but does not have the sheen of Satin. It gives a cool feeling on the skin. It is less smooth than Satin, but smoother than regular cotton. The fabric looks more luxurious than a regular cotton cover.

Cons:

We are not aware of any cons.

Mixed cotton

Blended cotton is increasingly being used to make duvet covers. Blended cotton generally consists of a composition of cotton and polyester. In terms of quality, you can place mixed cotton between regular cotton and micropercal.

Material:

Interweaving cotton fibers make blended cotton with polyester threads. The higher the percentage of cotton, the more natural the product is. The more polyester added, the more it tends to micropercal.

Advantages:

The best properties of both materials are used. The cotton ensures that the duvet cover absorbs moisture well, breathes, and falls smoothly. The polyester ensures that the cover is virtually non-iron and retains the color well. By combining the materials, the duvet covers are relatively cheap.

Cons:

Not everyone likes synthetics, which can be perceived as sweaty. Because a synthetic material is incorporated, the cover can pill. This means that fibre balls are formed on the fabric. These can be removed with a lint brush.

Micropercal / Microvezel

Micropercal is a synthetic fabric that has properties that are somewhat comparable to cotton. More and more duvet covers are made of microspherical because of the affordable prices. Other words for micropercal are: micropercale, microfiber, microfiche and microfiber.

Material:

Micropercal is a synthetic fabric, made of polyester and polyamide (nylon).

Pros:

Micropercal feels super soft, like a natural fabric. A duvet cover made of microfibre is lightweight, strong, falls smoothly, does not iron, regulates moisture, does not shrink, retains its shape, is easy to clean and dries quickly. Perhaps one of the main advantages of a micropercal duvet cover is that it is cheaper than cotton, but has comparable properties.

Cons:

Micropercal is generally thinner than other fabrics. Depending on the intensity of use, a microspherical duvet cover may also last less than a duvet cover made of, for example, cotton or Satin. Because it is a synthetic material, the cover can pill. This means that fibre balls are formed on the fabric. These can be removed with a lint brush. Some people experience a synthetic fabric as sweaty and very slippery. This is of course, very personal.
