Digital signage is by definition a mass communication tool that allows information to be disseminated in the form of multimedia visuals. These solutions are found in many contexts. The most common is advertising on a giant screen, but there are also communication screens in shop windows or companies.
It is a very effective tool to gain visibility. Especially on a giant screen that allows you to be visible from afar and by a large number of people at the same time. However, we can ask ourselves, how does it work? There is no single solution and it will depend on the type of solution used. However, this generally follows the same pattern, especially for giant screens.
PROGRAMMING SOFTWARE
If we look at the user side, the first element with which he interacts is the screen control software. There are many different ones, some free, some paying, others directly included with the giant SMD Screens. Some will simply be playlist managers with broadcast scheduling options.
While others will be more complete and will allow you to create small animations directly. It is however necessary to make the difference between the piloting software and editing software. It is the first that will communicate the elements to be broadcast on the screen.
A CONNECTION SOLUTION
As mentioned in our article on controlling screens, several options are possible depending on the location of the screen. If the giant screen is located nearby then a wired or Wi-Fi connection is possible. This will depend on whether or not you can connect a communication cable to the display.
In general, the wired solution is preferable to avoid communication problems as much as possible. For a remote screen, GSM connectivity is used (via the mobile network) thanks to the integration of a Sim card. The speed of the connection will then depend on the quality of the network at the location of the screen.
A STAND-ALONE ORDERING TOOL
We then arrive at the level of the screen where several elements are involved. The first is the one that will play the role of screen memory. It is he who will receive and store the playlists. He is also the one who will encode them to broadcast them on the screen. This tool can take many forms.
Generally, we use what is called a Player. However, in some installations, use is made of a PC wired to the screen which is controlled remotely. In some cases, but more rarely on a giant LED screen, we simply use a USB key formatted in a certain way so that the screen continuously broadcasts what is on it.
Note that there are hybrid solutions online. They include a programming solution, but also a backup cloud. These services generally operate by subscription and make it possible to lighten a technical part. However, they necessarily require an internet connection and the installation of a suitable receiver.
THE GIANT SCREEN AND BROADCASTING SOLUTION
Then comes the screen whose role is to broadcast what is sent to it. This is made possible on a giant LED screen by a “receiving card” which receives the encoded data and thus makes it possible to manage the lighting of the LEDs according to the elements to be broadcast. Thus, it will display different types of media, video of course, but also images, text, or animations.
It may seem obvious screen power supply but to work a screen needs to be supplied with electricity. Currently, the only solution that exists is to connect to the general electricity network. In the years to come, we may see solutions with the photovoltaic operation, for example.
To operate, a giant screen needs to be supplied with 230V and an intensity of 4 amps per square meter or 24A for a 6m² screen.
IN SHORT, HOW DOES A GIANT SCREEN WORK?
Overall, a giant screen, therefore, functions like any type of broadcasting tool. Like a television that needs a box or a decoder, a digital signage solution needs a media player. The main difference is that it is a user-managed closed loop. Indeed, it is he who decides and who initiates what is broadcast.
However, it is not up to him to decide on each of these elements. Indeed, it is generally the supplier of dynamic display solutions that will direct him to such and such a tool. They remain free to choose other elements in particular for the programming software part insofar as this one is compatible.
