She has played professionally for over 20 years and has won numerous tournaments. Early Life

Masako Katsura was born in Tokyo, Japan, on October 10, 1961. Masako Katsura started playing Go at the age of five.She won her first national championship at the age of eleven. In 1978, she became the youngest professional player in the game’s history.

Professional Career

Masako Katsura was born in Osaka, Japan, on October 20, 1996. She started playing Go at the age of four. At eight, she became the youngest player to win a major international tournament, the 4th World Mind Sports Games in Beijing. In 2012, she won the Women’s Honinbo title, becoming the first female player in over fifty years.

Katsura currently holds the rank of the 9-dan professional. She is one of only a handful of female professional Go players worldwide.

Life History

She became a member of the Japan Shogi Association’s Board of Directors in 2004 and served as the Association’s Vice President from 2009 to 2011. In 2012, she was awarded the rank of 7-dan by the JSA.

Katsura died on March 31, 2019, at the age of 77.
