Plumber | The word’s etymological roots

The name “plumber” has its roots in the Roman Empire, where it was first used. Leached lead was used in conduits and drain pipes on Roman roofs[5, and some of them were also coated with lead; lead was also utilised for piping and in the construction of baths.

Plumbum is the Latin word for lead. Plumbing was a term used in mediaeval times to describe anybody who dealt with lead; this can be seen in an excerpt from a book describing craftsmen who were repairing the roof of Westminster Palace; they were referred to as plumbers:

“To Gilbert de Westminster, plumber, who is now working on the roof of the pantry of the tiny hall, covering it with lead. As well as on numerous flaws in the roof of the little hall,” the letter reads. As a result, a person who was skilled in dealing with lead was first referred to as a Plumbarius, a title that was subsequently shortened to plumber.

United States of America

Plumbers may be subject to a variety of various licencing and taxes systems depending on where they practise their trade. The licensure of journeymen and master plumbers is separated in certain areas, whereas in others, only master plumbers are licenced and no other kinds of plumbers are licenced. Plumbers must meet specific training and experience criteria, as well as pass a certification exam, in order to get a licence. In most cases, a certification test is required. In the United States, there is no federal law requiring plumbers to have a valid licence to practise.

United Kingdom

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) were the most common type of plumbing qualification until they were replaced by the Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) in 2008, and then again by the National Qualifications Frameworks in 2015. In the United Kingdom, the QCF was replaced by the National Qualifications Frameworks in 2015. The terms National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) and Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) are still widely used in the vocational education and training sector.

Plumbers in the United Kingdom are required to earn the Level 2 and Level 3 vocational qualifications offered by the City and Guilds of London Institute before they may begin working in their field of expertise. Several regulating bodies in the United Kingdom, including the City and Guilds of London Institute and Pearson PLC, both of which are situated in the country’s capital city of London, provide authorised plumbing credentials, including the National Plumbing Council.

Canada

The licencing standards in Canada vary from province to province, and each province has its own set of restrictions. However, the provinces have pooled their resources to develop an Interprovincial Program Guide, which has assisted in the establishment and ongoing maintenance of consistent apprenticeship training standards throughout the nation.

The Red Seal Program, which is a component of the Interprovincial Criteria Red Seal Program (formerly known as the Red Seal Program), creates similar criteria for assessing the talents of craftspeople throughout Canada as part of the Interprovincial Criteria Red Seal Program. The presence of a Red Seal on a provincial or territorial trade certificate indicates that the tradesperson has shown that he or she has the knowledge and abilities required to fulfil the national standard in that trade.

Ireland

It was formerly essential to pass a qualifying test after completing a four-year apprenticeship in order to practise professionally in Ireland. This requirement has since been removed. Accreditation is very required for businesses in order to demonstrate their legitimacy and years of experience in their respective fields of operation.

Australia

In accordance with the Australian Standards (AS3500) Regulations 2013, plumbing work is defined as “any operation, work, or process in connection with the installation of pipes and fixtures to convey clean water into a building and liquid waste out of a building, or with the removal of pipes and fixtures to convey clean water into and liquid waste out of a building,” as well as the installation of pipes and fixtures to convey clean water into and liquid waste out of a building.

When the plumber has completed the principles of gas fitting, he will be able to apply for both his plumbing licence.
