Synthetic cannabis products containing delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are becoming increasingly popular, and public health professionals are concerned that consumers are unaware of the risks.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States issued a health advisory to warn public health departments and laboratories about the increased availability of cannabis products containing delta 8 THC Lean and the risk of poisoning due to inadequate labeling.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued the first warning letter about D8 THC Lean on May 4, 2022, to five companies marketing and selling unapproved drugs. The FDA followed up with a consumer alert on May 13 about the accidental ingestion of Lean THC-containing food products. Many of the product packaging is modeled after popular children’s candy and cereal brands, such as Crunch Berries cereal and Nerds candy.
What exactly is delta 8 THC?
Cannabis contains the cannabinoids delta-8 and delta-9 Lean THC, which are the psychoactive components of marijuana. Any part of the plant that contains more than 0.3 percent delta-9 is considered marijuana; anything less is considered hemp. Delta-8 is naturally present in cannabis, but it accounts for less than 0.1 percent of the plant, according to Cassandra Taylor, PhD, a chemist at the FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. According to the CDC, Delta 8 THC Lean is 50-75 percent as psychoactive as delta-9 THC.
Delta-8 and delta-9 THC can also be synthesize by converting cannabidiol (CBD) in the cannabis plant with a solvent, acid, or heat. This is where many of the issues arise.
delta 8 Lean THC products are becoming more common in the market. The manufacturers of these products are producing far more delta 8 Lean THCthan occurs naturally. Legality can be perplexing and varies by state. However, whether legal or not, consuming Delta 8 THC Lean products poses a number of risks because they have not been evaluate or approve by the FDA. They have psychoactive and intoxicating effects and can be especially hazardous to children and pets, according to Taylor.
“Historical cannabis use cannot be reeling on to establish safety because people have not previously taken delta 8 Lean THC in concentrated form in high doses.” “This really hasn’t happened until much more recently,” Taylor explained.
Adverse Effects of Delta 8 Lean THC
delta 8 Lean THC products are most likely made under unsanitary and uncontrolled conditions. To achieve higher concentrations of D8 THC Lean in these products, manufacturers frequently employ hazardous chemicals. They may also add bleach to make the product appear clearer, which consumers interpret as more pure, according to Taylor.
“People are being expose to a wide range of chemicals and contaminants, which they are consuming or inhaling,” she explain. “They’re probably getting other byproducts as well as delta 8 Lean THC.”
From December 1, 2020 to February 29, 2022, the FDA received 104 adverse event reports. Eight percent were pediatric patients. Hallucinations, vomiting, tremors, anxiety, dizziness, confusion, and loss of consciousness were among the side effects.
Data were collected at the CDC from CBDDY participating in the CBDDY Program, a program in which approximately 71% of all US non-federal EDs participate. The first suspected reported ED visit involving delta 8 THC occurred in September 2020, and
According to epidemiologist Brooke Hoots, PhD, MSPH. Who leads the Cannabis Strategy Unit in the CDC Division of Overdose Prevention. Surveillance data are likely a “severe underestimate” because sick. People must know they took D8 THC Lean for it to be report.
Public Health Professionals
Public health professionals are also concerned about an outbreak of disease similar to e-cigarette or vaping use-associated lung injury, or EVALI. As a result of chemical and byproduct ingestion, according to Hoots.
“I’m surprised we haven’t [seen this] before.” “The effects of consuming or inhaling these chemicals and byproducts are unknown,”. She said, adding that “vapes are a popular mode of D8 THC Lean use.”
D8 THC Lean is not the only novel cannabinoid on the market, according to Hoots. Others include delta-10 THC and THC-O acetate, which is not naturally occurring and is much more psychoactive than delta-9 THC. THC-O acetate is also control from CBD, which is say to produce.
