In the modern pilgrimage, Hajj pilgrims begin arriving by air, sea and land in the week leading up to the pilgrimage period. They usually enter Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the closest port capital to Mecca (45 miles away). From there they travel with their Hajj group to Mecca. As they approach Mecca, they stop at one of the designated areas to shower and change clothes, entering a state of enthusiasm and purity for the pilgrimage. Then they start repeating variables:
Here I am, O God, at Your command!
Here I am at your command!
You are unassociated!
Here I am at your command!
Praise be to you, love and dominion!
You are unassociated!
The sound of this chant (said in Arabic) echoes over the ground, as the monks in Mecca begin by the thousands at the rituals.
Day 1 of the Pilgrimage (8th Going-Hijjah):
During Hajj, Mina enters the vast environment of millions of pilgrims. SM Amin / Saudi Aramco World / PADIA
On the first official day of the pilgrimage, millions of pilgrims gathered traveled from Mecca to Mina, a small village east of the city. They spend the day and night in huge cities, praying, reading the Qur’an, and leaving for the next day.
Day 2 of the Pilgrimage (9th Going-Hijjah):
Pilgrims gather near the Mount of Mercy on Arafat Day, during the annual Hajj. SM Amin / Saudi Aramco World / PADIA
On the second day of the pilgrimage, the holocaust leaves Mina just after the day to travel to Larf Arafat for the upcoming Hajj experience. Known as “Arafat’s Day,” the alligators spend all day standing (or sitting) near the Mount of Mercy, asking Allah for forgiveness and making efforts. Muslims all over the world who are not on the pilgrimage go with them a spirit fasting for the day.
After sunset on Arafat Day, the trainees leave and travel to a nearby open plain called Muzdalifah, about halfway between Arafat and Mina. They have to spend the night and collect small bales of stone for use the next day.
Day 3 of the Pilgrimage (10th Dul-Hijjah):
Pilgrims head towards the site of “jamarat,” the symbolic disaster of the devil, during the Hajj. Samia El-Moslimany / Saudi Aramco World / PADIA
On the third day, the wolves move before sunrise, this time back to Mina. Here they throw their stone pebbles at columns depicting Satan’s temptations. Throwing the stones, the scholars tell the story of Satan’s attempt to dissuade Prophet Abraham from God’s command to sacrifice his son. The stones show Abraham ‘s rejection of Satan and the truth of his faith.
After starting the pebbles, most pilgrims kill animals (often sheep or goats) and give the meat to the poor. This is a symbolic act that shows their willingness to partake in something valuable to them, just as the Prophet Abraham was willing to command his son to command God.
Worldwide, Muslims celebrate Eid al-Adha, the Feast of Office, today. This is the second of two major holidays in Islam each year.
The Last Days of the Pilgrimage:
Pilgrims traveled across the Ka’aba in a period of pilgrimage known as “tawaf”. SM Amin / Saudi Aramco World / PADIA
The warriors then return to Makkah and perform seven tawaf, turning around the Ka’aba, the house of worship built by Prophet Abraham and his son. In other rituals, the exiles go near a place called “Abraham’s Station,” which is described as Abraham’s standing while the Ka’aba was being built.
The trainees cruise seven times between two small hills near the Ka’aba (and enclosed in the Grand Mosque complex). This is done as moments for the sake of princess Hajar Abrahá, who diligently searches the area with water for herself and her son before the spring that appeared in the desert for her. The pilgrims drink this ancient spring, called Zamzam, which is flowing today.
Pilgrims from outside Saudi Arabia must leave the country by the 10th Muharram, about one month after completing the pilgrimage.
After Hajj, pilgrims return home with renewed faith and are given honorary titles.
