What is Hematologist
Hematologists are doctors that specialize in diseases related to blood and blood cells. Hematology is the study of blood disorders and blood cancers. A hematologist may treat patients with various types of leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, sickle cell disease, thalassemia, hemophilia, and others. Hematologists may perform tests to diagnose any abnormalities in the blood, including blood counts, bone marrow biopsies, and genetic testing. They may recommend treatment options, such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, stem cell transplantation, or surgery. When Do You Need a Hematologist?
Your primary care physician will likely recommend one to you. If you have or suspect that you have:
- Low red blood cells, or anemia
- Thoracic deep vein (blood clots)
- Multiple myeloma, lymphoma, or leukemia (cancers in your bone marrow, lymph nodes, or white blood cells)
- A harmful response to an illness is sepsis.
- An inherited blood-clotting condition called hemophilia
- Sickle cell disease, which is characterized by imperfect red blood cells
Tests and Techniques
It should come as no surprise that hematologists examine your blood extensively. But they do more than just make diagnoses. They also do medical procedures including blood transfusions.
Complete blood count. This typical test assists your doctor in identifying or tracking your ailment. The amounts and properties of all three types of blood cells, including platelets, are examined in blood taken from a vein or finger.
Prothrombin period. These tests, along with another one termed partial thromboplastin time, check for clotting or bleeding issues. They also assess the efficacy of your therapies and drugs.
Transfusion of blood. It restores blood that you’ve lost as a result of an illness, accident, or surgery.
Chemotherapy. A hematologist-oncologist is a professional who administers this. It injects substances into your body to suffocate rapidly proliferating cancer cells.
Transplant of bone marrow. It replaces unhealthy stem cells from the spongy center of your bone with healthy cells from other parts of your body or from a donor, a procedure sometimes known as a stem cell transplant.
Ablation treatment. The damaged tissue is destroyed by your hematologist using heat, cold, a laser, or chemicals.
What to Expect While You’re There
Your hematologist might not always be in the same room as you. To interpret your test results or to keep track of your illness, they frequently collaborate closely with your internist, pediatrician, oncologist, or other main physicians. Typically, a lab worker who draws your blood is not a medical professional. Blood tests only take a few minutes. Your test results might not be available for several days.
